Two sides to a busy Friday

Here's a serious side. As a mom of African-American boys, I've got serious stuff to think about in preparation for their young adult years. S currently professes to want to join the Army and fight in "the civil war." I think I've been listening to too much Iraq reporting on NPR, huh? I really hope he doesn't do that. For many reasons, including his creative and independent spirit which I think just might not be a good fit in a strict command structure. And, you know, the whole danger/violence thing freaks me out a little bit.

Here's a silly side. Just ignore the swearword you see onscreen (that's your fair warning if you have little kids at the computer with you). Oink!!

Now, back to work for me.

That pig site rocks! I wish I could somehow save my creation, though. I'm quite proud of my pig.

The serious link had too many big words for me. The pig link... LOL!!!

As for S wanting to fight in the war... B tends to be on the patriotic side as well and I could totally see him joining the military. I think I would just die if he did, but how proud would I be? Immesureably. If that's the way my son goes, it's better than in a car accident or some random act of violence here!

I told Sam and Abe last night I would be proud of any honest job they choose. And I do mean that. I just hope and pray they choose safe ones. And I really really really hope they go to college and serve missions, so even if they want to go into the military or some other risky line of work, they can keep some self-respect and not be peons, and have firm spiritual foundations to stand on if they are placed in difficult situations.

Hope I don't offend any military type folks here. I will freely disclose, I grew up a professor's kid in a military town (well, during high school, anyway) and probably have some unreasonable biases.

I hope I didn't sound snotty about that. I just wanted to share that B wants the same thing. Maybe it's the age?? I'm hoping for the whole mission/education thing too.

No, you didn't at all. I was just wanting to clarify where I stood. G also told me that very very many little boys go through a soldier stage. So hey, maybe we finally found something B and S have in common!
