Spike

This is a post about volleyball. Its title certainly has nothing to do with the fact that I am almost through an eight-month project of watching the entire series of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer on DVD from Netflix.

Really. (I hope you appreciate my honesty. Some people might try to hide their nerdiness on their blogs, but not me. Oh, no. Next thing you know I will be sneaking in Star Trek references.)

On with the show.

In my new location, the thing the ladies get together and do for social time is playing volleyball. I have a lot of friends who play volleyball. They love it. They play it well. They are sometimes a little serious about it, which I can understand. I am sometimes a little serious about things I love and do well. But volleyball is not one of those things for me.

I've been invited to join the Thursday-night volleyball game. I have told them that I have basically some kind of disability when it comes to sports and that I would be a liability to any team I joined. They swear it is just for fun and I would be welcome.

I know I would embarrass myself horrifically. I am pretty sure that, despite their protestations that my utter ineptitude didn't matter, they would sort of wish I weren't there messing things up. Not to mention, the Thursday night when Dr. G gets home in time for me to make it to a 6:30 recreational hour is going to be a pretty rare beast. Hardworking, devoted man.

And I don't really want to play volleyball.

I do, however, really want to be friends.

Ideas?

Don't you know the Delta sector is unexplored!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist. I will not presume to give you advice. However, I do love the way you refer to your Buffy watching as a project. That gives it a legitmacy that I like. I am now going to use that for several things.

By the way, I love how you say nice, complimentary things about your husband. That is really, really awesome.

i used to be one of those volleyball players. I played every Wed night (still would but just a bad night for me). My friend used to come. She is not a volleyball player by any means. She is short, plump, and although I love her to death, she's wasn't really that good at it. BUT..the more she came the better she got! We all cheered her on, and gave her tips (only when she asked!) and besides, she is so much fun we all had a great time together.

So...go, go go! Smile, try your best. And the outcome may be making a new friend who likes to watch Buffy and will quit the volleyball to hang out with you instead!

Thanks, friends. I really think you have no idea here, there is some sort of reverse magnetism between me and balls of most kinds. I can barely hold onto the stability ball in my M-W-F Total Fitness class. But maybe if G is home one Thursday night I will give it a try.

Braden: I've been watching the John Adams miniseries with Sam (Sam only watches parts). And seeing what Abigail went through makes me not want to whine when my husband is gone an extra hour, or even a week!

Believe me when I say that I completely and utterly understand your sports dilemma. I. Hate. Sports. Sports. Hate. Me. The best thing about being a grown-up is nobody can ever force me to play any sport ever again.

That said, I do think volleyball is one of the more forgiving sports, should you be inclined to try. Or maybe they could use a score-keeper/cheerleader. Or maybe you could invite them for a movie night one weekend, where you get to befriend them on your own turf. Or something.

P.S. Spike has been my boyfriend for some years now. Hands off.

Go. Do. You will make friends!!

Unlike me. Who has every RS activity (sanctioned and non) on the calendar and still can't get her behind to one of them. :P

Do it for me, if nothing else. You know how vicariously I live through you!!!

I am the same about sports. It's not fun for me and I'm always afraid of losing friends rather than making them once I miss the ball enough. Plus, it's simply not how I want to spend my time.

Maybe you could start a group involving something you enjoy like a book club or cooking group. If you had it at your house it would also eliminate the problem of your husband not always being home on time. I'm not great at sewing at all but I love doing it anyway and ended up being asked to start the enrichment sewing group in our last ward. It was some work, but I made a few lasting friendships through it.
